Don’t make them wait and wonder
Imagine you are sitting at a table. You want more water. Before you even turn to look for the waiter, the glass is full again. You did not ask. You did not wait. It just happened. That is the first little thing: give people everything they need, before they have to stop and wonder. If something takes time, tell them. A quick word — “I am on it, two minutes” — is enough. It says: I have not forgotten you. You matter.Promise small, deliver big
Never promise what you cannot do. If you promise big and deliver small, they will never trust you again — and they will tell everyone they know. Do it the other way. Promise a little, and then do more than you said. Surprise them. That surprise becomes their story. And they tell everyone — in the best way.Really listen
Listening is not just hearing words. It is noticing the voice, the face, the mood. Are they happy? Tired? Angry? A robot reads a script. But a real person reads the guest. When you really listen, the guest feels seen — not handled. And a guest who feels seen comes back.Find a way
Sometimes the rulebook has no answer. Other times, a guest needs something no one has ever asked for. But do not give up at the first “no.” So look for the way around, the way through, the way up. When a guest sees you fighting for them — not against them — they never forget it.Be kind
Please. Thank you. I am sorry. Three tiny phrases that cost nothing and are worth everything. Say their name. Ask, do not order. And when something goes wrong, say you are sorry — and mean it. People are treated like numbers every day. So be the one who treats them like a person.Think ahead
Do not wait to be asked. Instead, see the need before they say it. The glass is almost empty — fill it now. They look lost — offer help before they ask. Answer the question before it comes. A guest who never has to ask feels taken care of. And that feeling is the Wow.The rule, in one breath
Don’t make them wait. Promise small, deliver big. Really listen. Find a way. Be kind. Think ahead. Six little things. Do them, and every guest leaves with a Wow moment — and comes back for more.Something you can do today
Pick one of the six and try it today. At work, choose one guest and really listen. Then at home, find a need and meet it before the other person asks. Watch what happens to their face. That little surprise is the Wow, starting right in front of you.The Voyage
This is The Voyage — a free series on hospitality and life at sea, for young people starting out. No ticket. No fee. Just what was learned over years on ships, passed forward, one lesson at a time.
A word from me: I’m a passionate traveler. These lessons come from a lifetime in hospitality, passed on freely. And while you enjoy your meal, here at Recept — tell us where you’d love to travel. I built TripSpot, which suggests accommodation for that trip. Maybe we’ll surprise you.tripspot-travel.com
