TOSHIN BUNAR / TOSHA'S WELL

TOSHIN BUNAR / TOSHA'S WELL

The street Tosin bunar was named after a Greek merchant, Mr. Teodoros Apostolos (1745-1810) who adopted Serbian name of Teodor Tosha Apostolovic.  He  lived and worked in Zemun. He was a very successful merchant who gained great wealth, and in memory of his deeds as a national benefactor  his name has been preserved to this day from oblivion.

Although  a very successful trader, Tosa enjoyed a rather poor health. He had a bad eyesight  and eventually, in time, he became completely blind. One night Tosa has a dream in which he was told to climb to the top of Bezanija Hillside and to roll down a barrel  from there. At the spot where the barrel stops  he should  dig a well. The water from the well  should  be healing and from it he would  regain his eyesight. That is what Tosa did, and the story goes that indeed, he did regain his eyesignt.
